3-Slot Phone Information:
The 3-Slot payphones were the first type of payphones and were mainly in use from their invention in 1889 to their demise in the late 1970s. They were made by The Gray Paystation Co., Western Electric, Northern Electric, and Automatic Electric.
There are 3 types of 3-Slot payphones, which are:
Prepay - Prepay phones require a coin deposit to recieve dial tone.
Local Prepay - Local Prepay requires a coin deposit to dial, but gives dial tone when the reciever is picked up.
Postpay - Postpay requires a coin deposit to talk, but gives dial tone when the reciever is picked up and allows dialing without coins.
The coin chute of any 3-slot has a bell and a gong on it. These are used for signaling the operator that coins have been deposited. The signaling pattern is as follows:
Nickels - Signaled by one "ding" of the bell
Dimes - Signaled by two "dings" of the bell
Quarters - Signaled by one "gong" sound of the gong

Single-Slot Phone Information:
The Single-Slot telephones replaced the 3-Slot phones starting in the 1960s and continuing into the 1970s. They are the phones most commonly seen in the 21st Century. They were made by Western Electric/AT&T, Northern Electric/Northern Telecom, and Automatic Electric/GTE/Palco.
There are two types of phones, "dumb" payphones (phones controlled by telephone co. coin lines) and COCOTs (Customer Owned Coin Operated Telephones - these use standard phone lines).
There are 3 types of "dumb" Single-Slot payphones, which are:
Prepay - Prepay phones require a coin deposit to recieve dial tone.
Local Prepay (Prepay - Tone or Emergency First) - Local Prepay requires a coin deposit to dial, but gives dial tone when the reciever is picked up.
Postpay (Semi-Postpay) - Postpay requires a coin deposit to talk, but gives dial tone when the reciever is picked up and allows dialing without coins.
For years, single slot payphones generated tones for coin deposit. These are used for signaling the tel. co. that coins have been deposited. The signaling pattern is as follows:

Quarters - Signaled by three "beeps"
