Indices and Reference Material

Yahoo
Infoseek - a full-text index which generally returns better-quality results than AltaVista--but has a less-flexible query language
AltaVista - this link will start the advanced search mode, which is far more useful than the default search in my ever-so-humble opinion
DejaNews - Usenet news archive. Don't forget to run your search using both the current and the old database.
MapQuest - free maps online, including point-to-point driving directions.
Four11 - Find people on the Internet.
MovieFone - What's playing.

News

CNN - Companion to the famous cable TV network. Well-organized content, but they stick to photography derived from video (which puts them at a visual disadvantage to other sites like ABC and MSNBC, which draw print-quality photos from wire services for their online content). Don't overlook the customized news which is available; this is a really neat feature!
ABC News - Attractive, complete, well-organized news site.
MSNBC - Microsoft and NBC's joint venture. It's a good site for content, but it's difficult to use without downloading a bunch of bulky client-side controls.
InfoWorld - PC-oriented trade magazine
PC Week - another PC-oriented trade magazine

Computer Security

Fortify - Some clever folks have figured out how to retrofit 128-bit encryption onto Netscape.
